Area Police
Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
